At Eco Solar Clean, we recently completed a solar panel cleaning job in Herbert, a beautiful rural town in North Otago, New Zealand. The property was located right next to State Highway 1, and while the location offers convenience and great views, it also exposed the home’s solar panels to constant road dust and grime from passing traffic.

Over time, a thick layer of dust had built up on the panels, significantly reducing their ability to absorb sunlight efficiently. On closer inspection, we also found patches of lichen beginning to spread across several panels, a common issue in rural areas where moisture and shade are present.

Solar panels work best when they’re clean and unobstructed. In this case, the combination of road dust and lichen meant the system wasn’t performing at its full potential. Not only does lichen reduce energy output by blocking sunlight, but it can also damage the panel surface if left untreated.

Our Cleaning Process

Using eco-friendly, deionised water and soft brushes, we carefully removed the layers of dirt without damaging the solar panels. For the lichen, we used a specially designed scraper to safely lift the growth without harming the panel coatings. The end result was a completely restored surface, allowing the panels to function at their maximum efficiency again.
