Flat Roof Solar Panels in Dunedin Overrun by Lichen: Here’s Why solar panel cleaning is important

We recently tackled a challenging solar panel cleaning job in Dunedin, where a homeowner had 9 panels mounted flat on their garage roof. The customer had contacted the solar panel installer and complained that her system wasn't producing much power anymore. She asked if they should be cleaned and unfortunately the company told her no! Luckily she saw one of our ads and decided to book in. A thick build-up of lichen had taken hold, particularly along the edges and corners where water, dirt, and organic matter collect.

Why Flat-Mounted Panels Attract Lichen
Unlike tilted panels, flat-mounted solar panels don’t allow rainwater to naturally run off. This causes water pooling, and when combined with dust, pollen, and shade, it creates the perfect breeding ground for lichen and moss. Over time, this growth doesn’t just look bad—it can be incredibly damaging.
The Hidden Dangers of Lichen on Solar Panels
Reduced Efficiency: Lichen and grime block sunlight, reducing the amount of energy your system can produce.
Surface Damage: Lichen has root-like structures that can etch into the glass if left untreated, permanently damaging the panel’s surface.
Seal and Frame Erosion: Growth around the edges traps moisture, leading to corrosion around mounts and seals.
Shortened Panel Lifespan: Persistent build-up leads to wear and tear, ultimately affecting your return on investment.

Our Cleaning Process
Using eco-friendly methods and soft brushes, we carefully removed the lichen without damaging the panel surface or voiding the warranty. We gave extra attention to the frame edges and corners—the areas most prone to regrowth.

Regular Maintenance Is Key—Especially for Flat Roof Systems
If your solar panels are installed on a flat roof, they need more frequent maintenance than angled systems. We recommend cleaning every 6 to 12 months, depending on your environment.
