Heavy Lichen Buildup on Solar Panels in Mosgiel: Why Regular Cleaning Matters

We recently completed a solar panel cleaning job on School Road South in Mosgiel, where the panels were heavily covered with lichen, moss, and general grime. These panels were installed on a garage surrounded by tall trees, which not only dropped organic debris onto the surface but also shaded the system in the afternoons, creating the perfect environment for moss and lichen to thrive.

The buildup, as seen in the photo above, was significant enough to seriously impact the efficiency of the system. Lichen forms a crusty, rooted structure that can bond tightly to the panel’s surface. Making it more than just a cosmetic issue, it reduces light absorption and can even degrade the panel over time if left untreated.

At Eco Solar Clean, we use purpose-built tools and deionised water to carefully remove lichen and restore performance without damaging your panels. After our clean, the panels were back to optimal condition, ready to capture more of Mosgiel’s sunlight.

If you’ve noticed a drop in your solar performance or can visibly see moss or lichen growth, it might be time for a professional clean. Prevention is key, especially in shaded or damp areas.
